Street art has acquired enormous popularity over the years and is now being recognised worldwide. Many countries have built museums exclusively devoted to street art and also hold exhibitions regularly. Recently, in the Barbican Art Centre, London, the famous street artist, Jean-Michael Basquiat’s work was exhibited. Basquiat, the first of his kind in New York, who passed away at an early age of 27, was an inspiration to many graffiti and street artists, including the very celebrated British graffiti artist, Banksy.
The location chosen for this exhibition was an area where street art was not very prevalent, which proved to be in the favour of its popularity as many people were introduced to this art through it. Basquiat’s art is said to be raw, extremely spirited, expressive and powerful. This exhibition, which was called, “Boom for Real”, exposed his work to the British audience as well, increasing the following for the street artists.
