Where Tourists Never Go

Drug gangs are submerged
into the population
that convince those without hope,
brains, guts, ambition
to get far, far away
from public housing ghettos,
poverty neighborhoods,
failed communities,
overrun, captured, possessed
by ministers of evil
that indifferently trash
the lives around them.

Tremors of fear
rock the city.

Unconfirmed reports
of terrorist attacks
paralyze some and
panic others, they
drive the weak to drink,
bring out the best in most,
the worst in a few;
another opportunity
for the debilitating crimes.

Violence, lawlessness,
to possess the land.

Poor Plan

The American hope,
a stable Afghanistan
after years of training
with wasted billions,
remains a fantasy.

Afghan security forces
are dangerously riddled
with unreliable soldiers,
erratic police officers,
who suddenly turn weapons
on unsuspecting allies
in a pattern of attacks
that deepens distrust,
and shatters cooperation.

If our soldiers
can’t trust Afghans
they won’t achieve
even limited goals,
so the Pentagon
should advise the president

once again
we’ve overreached.

In the land of the fleeced
the home of the broke,
some can afford expenditures
establishing new patterns
of extravagance.
Come shatter earlier values
that allowed a majority
to reach maturity
and minimal confusion
over social equality.
